The Importance of a Thank You Note
With Thanksgiving last week and the holidays upcoming, it seems only fitting that we give thanks for our health, our family, our friends and most importantly – the hiring manager that just interviewed you.
Sending a thank you note can seem old fashioned to some, but a thank you note is a very necessary tool in your job search. Aside from it being a courteous gesture, it gives you the opportunity to further express your interest in the position and sell your skill set to the hiring manager once again. Time and time again, I’ve seen a thank you note sway the hiring manager positively if on the fence about a candidate.
I recommend sending a thank you note both after a phone interview and a face-to-face to interview, with the latter including much more detail. While at a face-to-face interview, make sure to collect the business cards of everyone you meet. You’ll want to send a thank you note to each of them individually, customizing your message based on your specific conversation with them.
A well-written thank you note will include the following points:
- Thank the interviewer for their time and consideration
- Recap the highlights of the conversation
- State your interest and why you would be a good fit
- Express your desire to continue to the conversation
You should send your thank you note within 24 hours of your interview, and same day if possible. Being prompt is the key! A thank you note is your last chance to stand out against the other candidates and make a lasting impression on the hiring manager. This simple gesture can go a long way in securing your next position.
